Gabe: Before and After

sweet Gabe

We’ve said it before, but our aim is not simply to go, but to bring you with us to India and involve you in the vital work of loving the children of Sarah’s Covenant Homes with the Love that every child deserves to know.  By sharing the miracles, the needs, the transformations, and the atrocities, we pray desperately that you will share the stories.  These orphans need a VOICE!

Today, we are thrilled to share Gabe’s story with you.  Actually, it is just the beginning of his story.  Enjoy:

Gabe: Before

Gabe's back lesion before surgery

When Gabe came to SCH, he had unrepaired Spina Bifida.  The large myelomeningocele on his back (pictured here) prevented Gabe from leaning back in a chair or lying on his back until the lesion was operated on. And the tethered cord would continue to cause further damage to his bladder & bowel function and prevent his paralyzed lower limbs from possibly regaining sensation. The delicate protrusion was at constant risk of being scraped open, leading to meningitis.  The condition is so serious- so pressing, in fact- that surgery in the womb is considered wise enough to warrant the risk.  (Nashville friends- Vanderbilt hospital was the first to perform this surgery!)  That being said, when Gabe came to SCH at 1 year of age, without complete repair of the lesion on his back, it was evident that he hadn’t received the care you or I would give our children.  The government-run orphanage he’d previously been at, did what they seem to do… the kept him alive.  But now, in the loving care of Sarah’s Covenant Homes, it was his chance to thrive!

Gabe: After

Smiley Gabe SITTING post surgery

Today, thanks to the care of SCH and financial gifts of many around the globe, Gabe was able to have neurosurgery to remove his lesion.  He even did so well in the hospital that he was discharged a few days early! Here, he sits in his “bumbo” chair without worry of damage to his spine.

Previously unable to move his legs and had no feeling in them.  He now is able to twitch his toes, and flex and extend them!  Praise God!
